THE TUK TUK IS TICKING: THE STORY OF LIM LIV
“Tuk Tuks” are the most popular mode of public transportation in Cambodia. At the present time, the tourism industry in Cambodia is severely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic thus the Tuk Tuk drivers are losing their incomes and experiencing extreme poverty.
DO YOU HAVE A DAY WHERE YOU THINK “WILL IT EVER BE MY TURN?” “Dear All, my name is Lim Liv. I am a hardworking Tuk Tuk driver and a loving father of four children. For the past 7 years, I am a Tuk Tuk driver around Siem Reap, Temple of Angkor Wat. I bought my Tuk Tuk for 600$. My good friends from Australia gave me the money. Before the Coronavirus pandemic, I usually start working from 4:30 am until 5 pm. I can earn 20$ everyday. But I am renting 70$ per month, 30$ per person, without water. I spend 5$ per day for lunch and dinner, without breakfast. My children are studying but the school is now closed due to Coronavirus pandemic.
From these videos, you can see our present state of poor living and housing. It’s been more than one year of lockdown here in Cambodia that I am really worried and sick of thinking about our everyday life, especially when it comes to food. The best thing is my children and I are safe from Covid-19. I am willing to do other jobs but right now, the companies stopped hiring because they are closed. IF WE CAN’T SEE EYE TO EYE, LET’S TRY HEART TO HEART. I approached Maria Ces Seidel, publisher of Pilya Blog Magazine in Germany because I badly need help. We are very poor and hungry. I would like to share my story because I do not receive help from the government. If you read this, kindly help me and my four children. I am not losing hope and I am not afraid or ashamed to admit that I need help. If you happen to know some friends here in Cambodia, please share my story and feel free to contact me if they are willing to donate in cash or in-kind. So far, this is my “worst travel”. Thank you for bearing with me. Thank you very much. “
